Eco-friendly laundry detergents

Laundry consumes a lot of important parts in our lives: time, water, and electricity to name a few! Thankfully, sustainable laundry techniques are simpler than you may think, and using environmentally friendly laundry detergent is possible with some great developments in laundry technology.

What are the Components of an Eco-Friendly Laundry Detergent?

There are three fundamental traits you can look for in any detergent that earns the name ‘eco-friendly’:

  1. A phosphate-free detergent is the first thing to look for. In the UK this is almost guaranteed because phosphates have been banned and subsequently phased out of production.
  2. Biodegradable ingredients mean that the product will have a negligible impact on the environment once it’s been put through your washing machine or sink. The ingredients will break down quickly and easily on its journey from packaging to planet earth.
  3. Detergents that are packaged in recyclable containers go the extra mile. Once the product itself has been used, the container isn’t left over to negate all the positive impact you’ve had by choosing an eco-friendly laundry detergent in the first place. Recycle any containers you can by following the suggestion on the label.
How To Use Eco-Friendly Laundry Products
  1. Choose concentrated detergents like Persil small and mighty in the Eco Pack.
  2. Don’t overdose. Just follow the directions on the label for dosing suggestions. These amounts are tested and proven to give you the best clean possible. A little can go a long way.
  1. Wash at 30 degrees Celsius. Persil small and mighty is great for this, but many brands have detergents that wash just as well at 30 degrees Celsius as they do at 40! Cooler water means less electricity, which is always a good thing when it comes to sustainable laundry.
  1. Recycle the detergent’s packaging when you’re done. Whether it’s cardboard, a bottle, pouch, or box, there is always a way to reduce, reuse, and recycle.

Brands that are willing to take environmental considerations are constantly looking for ways to improve both formula and packaging. In the case of Persil, their Eco Pack offers 5 extra washes per container and uses 78% less plastic than their 25-wash bottle. We hope you’ll agree that sustainable laundry is possible now that you know what to look for and how to use it!
